A former news editor for The Intelligencer has made a big donation to Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Hastings.
Dave “Rogie” Vachon died in December of last year from brain cancer at the age of 54.
Friend, former editor at The Intelligencer, and current City Councillor Chris Malette presented a cheque for over $254,000 on behalf of Vachon’s estate to Habitat Monday afternoon.
Vachon had no family and the money came from the sale of his house in Belleville.
“Dave had a big heart. He wasn’t a people person but he loved this community and being in his job as wire editor for the Intell he was editing stories about this community and about agencies such as Habitat.”
Vachon’s donation was one of the largest bequests the local Habitat branch has ever received and the money will be placed in the “building fund” for future use in building affordable housing for families.
Malette said another charitable agency would soon be receiving a portion of Vachon’s estate but couldn’t provide further detail at this time.
