Tweed has taken a step that could open the way for two pending cannabis retail stores in the municipality.
It was just over two years ago that Tweed council was faced with the two applications for cannabis stores, with consultation deadlines or submissions by Wednesday of this week.
lt was decided there would be no such stores allowed within 150 metres of the library, as well as the two schools.
Mayor Jo-Anne Albert tells Quinte News “There was no provincial guidance for a policy about cannabis.”
Council met in special session Monday to reconsider.
“We used the 150 from the schools which is mandated but we also included the library in there which is on the back street on Metcalfe. And if we kept the library in, these two shops wouldn’t have been allowed.”
After much discussion Tweed council decided to remove the library from the policy, therefore cannabis stores can be located closer to the library.
