A final decision is imminent on the future of the former Quinte Secondary School in Belleville.
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board’s Committee of the Whole has approved a recommendation from an ad hoc committee that the school should remain with the board and be updated and repurposed.
As previously suggested, it’s being proposed that the Quinte Secondary building hold a kindergarten to grade 8 single stream French Immersion school, administration and other staff from three school board buildings (Education Centre on Ann Street, William R. Kirk, and a maintenance building to QSS) which would be closed, and the Quinte Adult Education Centre.
Because of having all French Immersion students in one setting, changes could come to other schools with those being Harmony Public, Bayside Public, Bayside Secondary, Harry J. Clarke, and Prince Charles school in Trenton.
Up-to-date cost estimates to renovate and update equipment at the school have not been made, but they will be considerably higher than estimates made about five years ago, putting the cost at $13.5 million.
The school board will make a final decision at its meeting June 21.
