Belleville is “undergoing a major transformation.”
Those are the words of a man who has been involved in the restoration and beautification of several building facades and interiors in the Downtown District over the past few years.
Now Mark Turner and son Jordan of Restoration Services Inc. have decided to make an investment of their own in The District.
They, along with Bruce and Dawn Firestone (new owners of China Gate Restaurant building) of Oshawa, and Dale Kehler and Vraaj Tanna of the Toronto area, have recently purchased what many will remember as the former Maze Mall building at 232 Front Street.
“With all of the new residential units planned for downtown and area we thought it was high time to get more involved. There’s so much potential here,” said Mark Turner.
Plans for the three-storey building, which includes a below-ground floor, include a cafe, a delicatessen featuring local meats, cheeses, confectionery, produce, specialty groceries, and a cigar shop.
There will be lots of room on the lower level and ground floor with more commercial/retail/professional businesses and for artisans.
Units could be very small, for just one person, or larger, to suit tenant’s needs.
Between six and eight apartment units including an Airbnb unit will make up the top two floors of the building and a rooftop terrace will be created.
The building, built in the 1880s, is now under renovation, and with the exception of apartments has been vacant for the past few years.
