A major condominium development on the Belleville waterfront has cleared another hurdle.
City Council gave its final approval to the Dockside Quinte Development, which plans for three apartment buildings and a marina, on Dundas Street West beside the Ramada hotel.
The approval means the developer just needs to satisfy a few more requirements with the city, so a building permit can be issued and construction can begin.
Plans for the development on Old Bay Bridge Road have evolved since it was first proposed in 2014 with some concerns, including environmental impacts and access to and from the property, but Director of Engineering and Development Stephen Ashton told councillors staff are confident in what the final proposal contains.
“There’s been about seven renditions of the plans. During this review, all staff departments including the engineering department, as well as the parks department, have been involved. So, it’s been very well vetted and nobody has concerns.”
Belleville Mayor Mitch Panciuk tells Quinte News the total value of the project won’t be known until the building permit is submitted, but says he expects the project to be worth “hundreds of millions of dollars.”
He added that the project’s proposed 302 residential units could make a big impact on the area’s housing market.
“Any type of housing, whether it be affordable housing, or even high-end housing helps, because it creates more supply in the market. So, this project to go ahead, would be phenomenal news and it’s nice to see this company recognizing that, and be willing to provide some housing for us.”
Panciuk added that there is no clear timeline on when a building permit would be issued, saying the next steps now are in the hands of the developer.
