It won’t go onto the budget until 2022, but Belleville Council has agreed to help fund a new monument, to honour the rail workers who raised the money to build what is now known as CAA Arena.
When it was first built in 1978, the Yardmen Arena was named to honour those CN Rail workers who had held a lottery to raise money for its construction.
That name was changed in 2018, ahead of the Belleville Senators’ second season in the city, when the team sold the naming rights to the Canadian Automobile Association.
At that time, a promise was made to build a monument to recognize that history, but no work has been done to this point.
On Monday, Councillor Kelly McCaw asked council if it would match funds raised by CNR Yardmen Tribute Committee, to a maximum of $150,000.
The Belleville Senators have not yet committed any funds to the project.
Councillors agreed and more details will be presented during 2022 capital budget talks in the fall.
