The Eastern Ontario Regional Network has made a formal submission to the federal and provincial governments requesting money to help with the establishment of ultra-fast Gig internet to homes and businesses across the region.
EORN is asking the federal and provincial governments for $200 million each.
Funding for the rest of the $1.2 to $1.6 billion project would come from the Canada Infrastructure Bank and the private sector.
The EORN Gig Project leverages previous investments in infrastructure and services and will ultimately result in a fibre optic backbone and other infrastructure across the region built to handle the speed and capacity of the Gig project.
“What we’re proposing to do with our federal, provincial partners and the private sector is to fix the issue now with a comprehensive gig solution that will last over a generation. It needs to be done, it needs to be done right and prepared with a plan to help the region meet the national service level.”
“We’re 113 municipalities across Eastern Ontario that are united in the desire to have an EORN-run region-wide fibe which is a home broadband project. But we need our partners. We need a private sector of course, but we need our provincial, federal governments.”
The project would use a competitive process to choose a telecommunications partner and maximize coverage across the region.
