Shovels have yet to hit the ground but construction on a new hospital in Picton is already being delayed, however, the hospital foundation says there is a silver lining.
The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation, which is raising the community’s share of the cost of the new build, says the opening date has been pushed back from 2025 to 2027.
The main reason for the delay is pandemic related, with the Ministry of Health having to focus on the emerging health crisis, which slowed down the early approval stages for the hospital.
The foundation is trying to raise $16.5 million towards the new build and if there’s a bright spot, it’s the fact that the extended timeline gives them two more years to raise the extra $1.5 million they need to hit their goal.
The PECMHF will start making payments towards construction in 2024.
