Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says all political parties need to remain vigilant to the “infiltration or active presence of fringe, or extremist, or unacceptable and intolerant elements” particularly after what happened in Washington earlier this month.
The PM was reacting to a question stemming from Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole’s consideration to kick Derek Sloan out of the caucus, after the Hastings-Lennox and Addington MP took a campaign donation from known white nationalist Paul Fromm.
Trudeau says a call to boot Sloan from the Conservative ranks is nothing new.
“The Liberal Party has been calling for Erin O’Toole to remove Derek Sloan from caucus for many, many months now, following a number of unacceptable comments he has made. We’re pleased Erin O’Toole has finally decided to take leadership and we’ll see how that unfolds.”
Trudeau was also asked about Fromm’s organization receiving a COVID-related wage subsidy from the Federal Government, with Trudeau responding that they had to get those grants out as quickly as possible back in March and then review who received them, noting that “anyone who is found to be breaking the law as a corporation or organization will face severe penalties.”
