Food literacy has been on the back burner for so long, and now it is time to do something about it. Those are the words of MPP Daryl Kramp. The Hastings Lennox and Addington member was a guest on the Lorne Brooker Show Friday morning, discussing Bill 216 – The Food Literacy For Students Act.
Kramp says he has never seen such an avalanche of support for any legislation at any political level.
“Food literacy has been, quite frankly really on the back burner for so, so long. The old story – do it right. My private members bill going forward is to really recognize the reality that food is really central to who we are.”
Kramp says ministers, and MPP on both sides of the floor are stepping forward with their support.
“We did a lot of work on it. We did some consultation across the board, with various departments, the ministers. I got full support from all the ministers. When I saw that was coming I said we have a shot.”
Kramp says that in his research he has discovered unhealthy food costs the system tens of billions of dollars a year.
Now he says, the focus must be to implement food literacy into the education system, so we can provide students with the knowledge of food, and the power it has.
