Belleville city staff want to let councillors know about what they’re referring to as “vagrancy issues” in the downtown district and other parts of the city.
Council will see a report on Monday that outlines some complaints from local business owners which include people loitering, swearing, fighting, harassing customers and sleeping in or outside local businesses, among others.
The report notes that staff have had discussions with Belleville Police and the crown’s office about the challenges in dealing with those situations and some possible solutions, but that “the issue is much larger than anything the BPS or court system can influence on their own”.
Staff say the report, which you can read in full by clicking here, is intended to highlight the negative impact of those issues on the community and to foster more discussion about potential solutions.
