A seniors housing project proposed for Belleville made its way through the first step of the planning process.
The proposal was presented to the Planning Advisory Committee on Monday night.
The Quinte Senior Citizens Home would be located at 193 North Park Street beside a two-storey 30-unit retirement home already on the subject lands.
The new three-storey building would have 54 units creating an L-shaped building.
Developer Andy Geertsma is seeking a rezoning of the property to allow for the construction of the new building located on North Park Street between Bell Blvd. and McFee Street.
Consultant Ralph Vanenbdurg outlined how the building would be situated on the lot.
He noted that it will have sidewalks and a community outdoor area with a gazebo and said it would not bring shade to any of the neighbouring properties.
Following the meeting, Planning Chair Paul Carr tells Quinte News he regards the proposed development as “A fantastic project.”
“It goes to what council’s goal of trying to achieve a thousand rental units by the end of this term.”
Carr added, “This just continues on in that form.”
“We appreciate the fact developers are looking to invest in the housing stock and certainly in the rental stock.”
The plan calls for 63 parking spaces, including seven handicapped spaces. The total complex would have 84 units and 46% landscaping. A bicle rack will be installed outside the eastern entrance.
Staff will bring a report with recommendations at the Planning Advisory Committee meeting in November.
