It was always going to be an interesting Sunday for firefighters at two of Belleville’s fire stations.
Stations 3 (far east end on Old Highway 2) and 4 (Harmony Road) were scheduled for firefighter training
at a house in Point Anne which was scheduled for demolition over the next few days.
But there was more in store.
In the midday today the stations were called out to a structure fire which turned out to be an electrical issue with no flames at a home on Townsend Road.
Most firefighters were quickly stood down from that call only to find that there was a plume of smoke billowing from a property on Tank Farm Road.
Cannifton pool and hot tub business Aqua Bay has a large storage area at 20 Tank Farm Road and a little rainwater had somehow reacted with “pool pucks” stored on a skid causing a chemical reaction igniting flames which spread to two dumpsters filled with cardboard and other materials.
Firefighters used water and foam to put out the flames and stopped what could have been a serious incident.
Fire Protection Officer Ryan Rutter says chemical reactions can be dangerous and can’t always be doused with water alone.
“In more serious incidents using only water would be exactly the wrong thing to do. We did a good job on this.”
There were no injuries.
