Belleville Police have released more information on an incident in the east end of the city on the weekend.
Emergency crews responded to a home on Bridge Street East around 6:15 a.m. Saturday, where police say a passerby had put out a suspicious fire, before calling the incident in.
Police say a 72-year-old Belleville man was found dead at the scene and that further investigation has led to an arson charge against a 36-year-old Belleville man, who was held for a bail hearing that was put over to this Wednesday, July 15.
Investigators say the suspect’s name won’t be released, to protect the identity of the victim and that a publication ban has been put in place on any further evidence.
The BPS Criminal Investigations Branch and forensics team are investigating and anyone who might have further information on the case is asked to contact Detective Constable Stephanie Bested by phone (613-966-0882 ext. 2306), or by email (sbested@police.belleville.on.ca), or by calling Quinte Crimestoppers (1-800-222-8477).
