Owners of a Carrying Place jerk chicken shop have made an emotional plea to council to allow them to operate their business “with fair and equal treatment” and to smoke meat on site for the 2020 season.
Saiqa Sheikh and Josh Blake of JERKebago, at 22178 Loyalist Parkway, say complaints about their outdoor smoker and garbage flying around in 2017, which they say were false and over exaggerated, led to strict conditions being put on their licence the past two years.
Sheikh says that makes it difficult to run their unique business the way they envisioned.
The pair say their concerns weren’t being given the same consideration as those of nearby residents.
Other conditions imposed in 2017 including the addition of a fence on the property and having washroom facilities available also have to be followed, but Blake noted that because of the ongoing pandemic, they aren’t allowed to provide washroom facilities for the time being.
He added that officials from Hastings-Prince Edward Public Health have already inspected the business’s social distancing measures and given them the all clear to operate.
