The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is causing some delays in the completion of Belleville’s new police station.
The plan had been to move the Belleville Police Service into the new building at the corner of College and Sidney Streets by the third week of June.
A grand opening was set for July 29.
That’s now under review.
Special Projects Manager Joel Carr-Braint says the new building is 80% complete but there are holdups.
Deputy Chief Mike Callaghan tells Quinte News the virus lockdown is blocking needed supplies.
He says the condition of the present police station is not good, for instance, a washroom downstairs has been closed off.
Callaghan says, “The lack of space in the old building, lack of space to do the job has been challenging. In the new building that will be overcome. The expansion from 37,000 square feet to 67000 square feet, an increase of 30,000 square feet is significant; allowing our membership to carry out their jobs.”
He indicated another big advantage in the new building will be the community board room which non-profit organizations can use and where media scrums will be held, particularly when showing project investigations that have been completed.
