Indigenous leaders held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday morning to talk about blockades, demonstrations, and internal disagreements that have halted commercial rail traffic coast to coast.
There is a demonstration on CN property in Tyendinaga Township, and another location on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory near Highway 49. No trains have made it through the Quinte region since February 6, when one person told Quinte News if a train tries to come through, they will put a dump truck on the tracks.
Chief of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte R Don Maracle was one of those who spoke. He says dialogue is the key to ending a long-standing dispute.
First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde discussed the rail demonstrations that have forced the stoppage of traffic through the Quinte area and across eastern Canada. He talked about what it would take to end the demonstrations.
Bellgarde says the future needs to be dealt with differently.
Chief Maracle says the media takes some blame if not getting the proper information out.
PM Justin Trudeau, Opposition Leader Andrew Scheer, and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh also discussed the blockades. You can CLICK HERE for that story
