It was just about a perfect February’s day for fresh air and ice fishing.
Hundreds of kids, their parents, caregivers, and friends joined Belleville police officers for the annual Cops and Kids Ice Fishing Derby.

Derby organizer Constable Pat Comeau said the derby, along with one in the summertime, served to build trusting relationships between police officers and young kids and others.
Officers were out in large numbers mingling and fishing with kids and families on a brisk day on the ice off the Herchimer Avenue boat launch.
Also volunteering at the event were members of the Belleville Fire Department, Hastings-Quinte Emergency Services, and the Hastings Prince Edward Regiment, including cadets.
The derby was a free event with warm food and drink provided.
The first 100 kids under 12 received toques marking the occasion.
