Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison says he’s “not surprised” that Canada’s elite special forces team is no longer coming to CFB Trenton.
News broke Monday afternoon that the Joint Task Force 2 would not be relocating to the base, after the Federal Government expropriated land from longtime farmer Frank Meyers, to make room for a new facility.
Harrison tells Quinte News it’s been a difficult process and he wishes the situation was handled differently.
He added that while while JTF2 may not be coming to town, the door is still open for expansion at 8 Wing.
Plans surrounding the expansion created a buzz in the Quinte community, due to the economic spinoff it would have created. It was believed to be in the tens of millions annually.
As the project’s delays continued, the cost went from around $350 million to $1.2 billion, causing the government to change its mind on the move.
