The citizens’ fight against the expansion of Melrose Quarry in Tyendinaga Township has taken a new twist.
A non-profit group of residents, Citizens Against Melrose Quarry, has launched a GoFundMe fundraising campaign to cover legal costs of the campaign against the proposed expansion.
Tyendinaga Township Council recently rezoned nearby land for an additional new 63-acre quarry.
In a statement just released, the group states that it does not feel this is a responsible or appropriate location for another quarry, with many residents living in close proximity to the blasting zone.
It says the current Long’s Quarry wants to double the footprint of extraction, despite numerous concerns and opposition from local residents
The location is next to the hamlets of Melrose and Blessington.
Chair of CAMQ, Sue Munro, says the Land Planning Appeal Tribunal is hearing some issues related to licensing, brought by the Ministry of Natural Resources and forestry.
CAMQ has party status at the hearing.
Munro says the group still has concerns regarding water safety, considering that three out of four years were drought years.
The group has opened a GoFundMe page, hoping to raise $100,000 to fund the legal fees anticipated in the fight against the new quarry.
