The planned construction of a new pedestrian bridge in downtown Belleville will not get underway this year.
The pedestrian bridge over the Moira River in the city centre was shut down last year due to its deterioration.
The new $3.7 million bridge had been scheduled to get underway this summer, after spawning season.
Manager of Engineering Ray Ford tells Quinte News there are two reasons for the delay.
Discussions are still underway with federal Fisheries and Oceans regarding permits for the construction, and high water levels are playing a role as well.
Ford says, “We havent issued a construction contract yet because that’s dependent on our Fisheries and Oceans permit. We’ll need to include some items in our contract that reflect the work that needs to be done to satisfy federal requirements. So until we get through those discussions we won’t be able to issue the contract.”
