One more step has been taken toward a marijuana processing operation being opened in the former Nortel building on Sidney Street in Belleville.
Monday night Belleville city council approved adding wording to a zoning by-law for the property allowing a marijuana processing facility as an approved use.
Some residents living nearby have objected to the proposal citing safety and security concerns.
Meanwhile, councillor Paul Carr said any marijuana processor would have to be licensed by Health Canada.
Councillor Chris Malette said neighbouring residents might better be worried about the pollution the former Nortel plant left underground on the property.
The proposed marijuana processing facility would create up to 50 new jobs.
