Belleville city council has voted to donate $400,000 to the Quinte Humane Society over eight years to help build a new $10 million animal shelter.
However, councillor Bill Sandison wanted the donation increased to one million dollars spread over four years.
In the end most on council agreed with councillor Chris Malette who said council could add to the donation by cancelling development charges and other fees and asking that any developers pay for the extension of sewer services to the property instead of the Humane Society.
Malette and others said that $400,000 was reasonable given that the City of Quinte West was donating $250,000.
Staff is bringing back a report on options regarding increasing the donation to a future council meeting.
The funding will come from the Elixicon Revenue Reserve Fund.
