Five thousand people in Quinte West will have a chance to break a Guinness World Record this coming Canada Day Weekend.
Leon’s Superstore Trenton owner Mike Eden made a presentation to council Monday night, on Operation Stand Proud, an attempt to put together the world’s largest human maple leaf.
Eden says the event is an homage to the men and women of our military and their families.
The event, which would be held at Centennial Park on June 29, will also raise money for the Soldier On charity, but Eden says they’re going to need more than just donations to make it work.
He says those organizational plans will continue over the next month or so.
The current world record is just over 1,500 people and Eden says they’re hoping to smash that, getting 5,000 people involved in the Quinte West attempt.
Those 5,000 people will get a special t-shirt and will have to hold the shape of the maple leaf for five minutes to make the attempt official.
Eden is also hoping the city will be able to mark the occasion with some sort of permanent monument in the park if they’re successful.
Quinte West City Staff will be putting a report together on the planned event and will bring it back to council for approval.
