(Frank Pucci)
They had to put in overtime at the “Dukedome” last night.
David Foot with the call on CJBQ as Frank Pucci ended it at 8:19 of the 4th period as the Dukes beat Georgetown 4-3 to win the 3rd Buckland Cup in their history. Pucci was one of 4 players to join the Dukes in the playoffs after his Junior “B” team was eliminatedfrom their post season. He says it was an easy transition.
It was Pucci’s second of the game. Belleville’s Josh Supryka and Campbellford’s Colin Doyle scored the others. Doyle, the Dukes captain was named the playoff MVP.
Supryka played for Wellington from 2013-2015. He re-joined the Dukes after his Junior “B” team in Chatham was eliminated from the post season. Supryka is glad to be home.
Coach John Druce took over the Dukes half way through the season. Druce led the host Cobourg Cougars to the RBC Cup last year however they did not win the OJHL championship. He says this is different.
Wellington advances to the Eastern Canadian Championships for the Dudley-Hewitt Cup in Dryden in Northern Ontario. They will play the winners of the Northern Ontario Hockey League and the Superior International League. The Dukes won the Dudley-Hewitt in 2003 and 2011.
Trenton won it the last two seasons.
