Two more Belleville police officers are being called heroes.
Belleville Police Constable Terri Smith has been nominated for the Police Association of Ontario’s Hero of the Year Award. The award recognizes police officers who go above and beyond the call of duty.
Cst. Smith was nominated Wednesday for her role in protecting the lives of hundreds of students during a shooting at Quinte Secondary School in March 2016.
No one was injured in the shooting. The suspect is accused of firing a shot as a distraction prior to moving on to rob the RBC bank on Front Street.
The nominator said everyone went home to their loved ones that night because of the staff and responding officer’s heroism.
Also on Wednesday, Detective Sergeant Ian Jarvis received a nod for the hero award.
Det. Sgt. Jarvis was nominated for assisting a local woman last year who was experiencing difficulties after separating from her common-law spouse. Jarvis offered counselling and advice on what she should do.
Constable Todd Bennett, Detective Constable Mark Abrams and Belleville Police Sergeant Pat Kellar have also been nominated for the award.
Nominations close March 19 with results expected to be announced mid-May.
