Belleville’s Downtown Docfest is ready to celebrate a milestone this year, as the festival kicks off for the fifth time, in March.
Organizers of the festival says it’s becoming a “must-attend event”, with the Downtown Docfest solidifying itself as the place to go for great films focused on the environment, social justice, law, the economy and more.
This year’s opening gala film is another musical documentary called Miss Sharon Jones and is directed by two-time Oscar winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple.
It chronicles the life of the funk-soul singer Sharon Jones, who battled pancreatic cancer, just as her band was starting to take off.
Following the film, the nine-piece funk band The Soul Motivators will perform a number of Jones’ biggest hits.
That film is just one of about 40 that will be played over the three-day event, which starts March 4.
