Two Belleville schools, and residents, affected by a gas leak in the northeast end of the city.
Officials locked down Hillcrest Public school …students will go home on buses but others will remain in the school until picked up by their parents. St. Theresa’s Catholic Secondary school was evacuated …students being accommodated in the Quinte Sports centre. The gas leak occurred when construction equipment broke a natural gas main just after 3 this afternoon. No one was injured. Residents are also being evacuated from homes in the neighborhood. Anyone with no where to go is being accomodated at the Quinte Sports Centre.
Belleville Firefighters and police are on scene. Streets in the area of McFarland just off Canifton Road have been blocked off.
Meanwhile, what was originally thought to be a large grass and brush fire on Belleville’s east end this afternoon..turned out to be a planned..and controlled burn on the Airport Parkway.
