In a final day of budget deliberations Belleville city council slashed a total of one-point-seven million dollars ….ending up with a two-point-six percent increase in its 2009 budget.
Councillors cut a millon off the capital levy and most of the rest were cuts made by staff which would not impact on service. City hall kept its increase to under one percent but social services came in at nearly a two percent hike and and police at one percent. For the residential taxpayer with an average property assessment at 165-thousand …in Belleville it means 75-dollars extra on the tax bill this year, Canifton urban will pay 73 extra, Canifton rural 57- more and rural 47-dollars more.
