A Shopper’s Drug Mart store planned for Picton has a new life. Prince Edward County council voted Monday to reverse an earlier decision by the planning committee that would have prevented the store from going up at Main and Washburn streets. Concerns were raised that the store wouldn’t have enough parking spots. But several councillors said the municipality should overlook that fact, given that the new store could boost the economy. Craig Hunter, a planning consultant for Shopper’s Drug Mart, said the decision will allow the owners to file building permits this summer and have the store up and running in 2010. He added the store will create about 50 new jobs and the number of parking spots would jump from 42 to 61 if a property next door can be acquired.
