A couple fires in Quinte. The 4-0-1 was shut down for about 90-minutes last evening after a stubborn blaze in a tractor trailer. Quinte West Fire Chief John Whalen says the rig carrying 48-plastic kayaks was engulfed in flames at 6:20 last night in the westbound lanes near Wallbridge Loyalist Road. Thick black smoke and icy conditions forced the closure. The Montreal-area driver wasn’t injured.
Meanwhile, Belleville Firefighters were able to save a 1.5-million dollar apartment complex near the train station yesterday afternoon. The 18-unit building under construction at 24 Starling Street could have been destroyed if a contractor hadn’t noticed the glow through a window. Damage was limited to a few scorched pieces of lumber. The cause has been ruled as accidental.
