High-speed internet could be available as early as the spring of 2010 for most of Northumberland County where it isn’t an option.
Barrett Xplore was chosen by county council to bring broadband services to Northumberland, at a cost of 759-thousand dollars, 217-thousand less than the provincial grant for the project.
Barrett will be able to cover 85 per cent of the area high-speed can’t reach, and council may ask Queen’s Park for permission to use the extra money to go even further into unserviced areas.
The new service isn’t expected to affect local service providers, since the project is only to provide service where there is none.
