Some children in the Hastings-Quinte area are beginning to get special funding to buy winter clothing, despite a change in provincial policy.
Social services deputy-director Steve Gatward says nearly 18-hundred children have benefited from the local program so far this year, not as many as under the previous provincial program. He expects those numbers to increase before the end of the year. The social services department decided to provide the funding this year after the province changed to a year-round system, rather than a once-a-year lump sum in the fall.
