Changes could be coming in the way local elementary and secondary schools and their mascots are named.
At its meeting tonight the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board’s Committee of the Whole will see a staff report recommending, among other things, that schools no longer be named after individuals and the renaming of Sir John A. Macdonald Public School in Belleville.
Staff also recommend a new mascot be chosen for Bayside Secondary School. The school’s teams are known as the Red Devils.
The focus in the naming policy recommended is the promotion of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
