It will be another month before a decision is made on whether or not to offer year-round maintenance on an unassumed and unnamed Prince Edward County road that motorists are using at their own risk.
Thursday, County council’s committee of the whole heard from members of the Prince Edward Rod and Gun Club on the shape of Gun Club Road and the trials associated with not having it serviced year round.
The Prince Edward Gun CLub is a not-for-profit organization that has promoted safe use of fire arms since 1947.
“The club is threatened without a safe access way to the road,” said Morgan Hill taking issue with the seasonal level of service. “In 2013 we had to cancel an open house because the road was deemed unsafe for vehicles. It needs to be accessible for emergency vehicles during any season,” he said.
Hill explained to the committee how 25 of the 115 club members, both men and women, use the facility during the winter months.
“The club that has been paying taxes on the property since 1976, it doesn’t have resources or equipment to maintain this level of road.”
During the meeting, staff presented a report that would see the County open and assume the southern 220 metre portion of the unnamed and unassumed road allowance off Gun Club Road, name the open portion Gun Club Road and offer seasonal maintenance. The report also suggests closing off the balance of the unnamed and unassumed road allowance off Gun Cub Road that is essentially the old township boundary between North Marysburgh and Hallowell. It runs from the Picton Bay to Gun Club Road.
