It took months of planning and discussion and in less than five minutes Monday night, the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board approved numerous changes to numerous schools in Belleville, Prince Edward County and Centre Hastings.
Below are the following changes in Belleville and when they will be implemented.
- The consolidation of Hillcrest School and Prince of Wales Public School at Prince of Wales Public School this September (2017).
- The consolidation of Quinte Secondary School and Moira Secondary School at Moira Secondary School, and boundaries modified so some students move to Centennial
Secondary School by September, 2018. - Queen Elizabeth Public School and Queen Victoria School be
consolidated pending submission of a business case to the Ministry of Education; seeking
Ministry of Educating funding/approval to build a new Grade K-8 elementary school
in Belleville. Potential locations could include the Queen Elizabeth Public School property or another location in the east end of Belleville. Should funding/approval not be approved, the board will seek funding/approval for an addition/renovation at Queen Elizabeth. The schedule is pending for this. - Students in Grade 7 and 8 students from Sir John A Macdonald School will relocate to Centennial Secondary School, creating a Grade 7-12 school effective this September (2017).
- Revisions to the attendance boundary between Sir John A Macdonald School and Susanna
Moodie Elementary School effective September, 2018. Families with children registered at Sir John A. Macdonald School will not be impacted by attendance boundary changes.
Below are the changes in Prince Edward County and when they will be implemented
- That Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board approve Sophiasburgh Central School to remain open subject to conditions one to three (1-3) below:
1. That all agreements relative to establishing “The Sophiasburgh Opportunity” a
Community Hub at Sophiasburgh Central School are signed in accord with the
Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board’s Administrative Procedure
570, version October, 2015;
2. Signed contractual agreement(s) with the Sophiasburgh Community hub and The County of Prince Edward fund sourcing and governance building stakeholders are required, by no later than April 30, 2018;
3. Student population sustainability, to ensure program viability must be part of the
ongoing contractual consideration; Should by May 1, 2018, signed contractual agreement(s) are not realized, for the establishment of a financially viable community hub at Sophiasburgh Central School; then the students from Sophiasburgh Central School are consolidated with students at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute (PECI) for September, 2018 - Consolidation of students from Pinecrest Memorial Elementary School and Queen Elizabeth School (Picton) at the Queen Elizabeth School (Picton) site effective this September (2017) to form a Kindergarten to Grade 6 school.
- Effective this September (2017), relocating Grade 7 and 8 students from Pinecrest Memorial
Elementary School, and Queen Elizabeth School (Picton) to Prince Edward Collegiate Institute, creating a Grade 7-12 school - Effective September 2018, students would be consolidated from Queen Elizabeth School (Picton) and Prince Edward Collegiate Institute at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute, creating a Kindergarten to Grade 12 School.
Below are the changes in Centre Hastings and when they will be implemented
- Starting this September (2017), the Madoc Township Public School (MTPS) Grade 7 and Grade 8 students will be reincorporated into the Madoc Township Public School and once again the school will run as a K-8 school.
- Look for approval for Centre Hastings Secondary School, Madoc Public School and Madoc Township Public School be consolidated pending submission of a business case to the Ministry of Education and approval of funding to build a new K-12 school located in the Madoc area, and in consultation with the municipality regarding location options and plans to enhance
greenspace for the K -12 school.
Should it not be approved by the Ministry of Education, Madoc Public School (MPS) would be consolidated with Centre Hastings Secondary School as a K-12 school; pending Ministry of Education approval for an addition and/or renovations at Centre Hastings Secondary School with funding for proposed demolition of MPS. If the board goes forward with renos, Madoc Township Public School would remain a K-8 school.
The board says in all areas of the board, they will continue to look at options for closures, consolidations, renovations or new builds that make sense.
As far as either renovation or new school builds are concerned, the board will need to submit to the Ministry of Education by September 8, 2017.
