Victory is sweet once again for the Trenton Golden Hawks.
The boys from Quinte West earned their second straight Dudley Hewitt Cup championship – and their third trophy in two years – on home ice Saturday night with a 2-1 victory over the Georgetown Raiders. They also exacted a measure of revenge on the Raiders for defeating them in seven games in the Buckland Cup OJHL final.
Forward Michael Silveri notched the game-winning goal three-and-a-half minutes into the third period and describes his sentiments on such a big moment.
Defenceman Brandon Marinelli was one of nine G-Hawks to win the Dudley Hewitt in Kirkland Lake last season and admits that this season’s championship was extra special.
He says that being a veteran from a previous championship team, he understands what it takes to sacrifice and come up big in the important moments.
Goaltender Chris Janzen was named the tournament’s top goaltender, stopping 33 of 34 shots in the final game and says getting back at Georgetown was on everybody’s minds.
G-Hawks head coach/GM Jerome Dupont admits it was a tough road to glory for his team.
Anthony Sorrentino scored the other Trenton goal, his fifth of the tournament and earned an all-star nod for a 10-point week. Assists went to Dawson Baker, Marinelli and James Thomson.
With the win, Trenton becomes the first team to win consecutive Dudley Hewitt Cups since the Chateauguay, Quebec Elites did it back in 1993 and 1994. They also become the first Ontario team in the current format to go back-to-back.
The Golden Hawks are now off to Cobourg to compete in the Royal Bank national championship for the second straight year. That tournament starts next Saturday, May 13 at the Cobourg Community Centre.
