Brighton Council has heard loud and clear that something has to be done to fix a contaminated property in the town’s industrial park.
Brighton resident Gail Vaz-Oxlade voiced concern at Tuesday night’s meeting, about the need to clean up the former Cooey Metals property on Prince Edward Street, which has long been contaminated with hazardous environmental waste.
Vaz-Oxlade says it seems like councillors have been ignoring the issue over the past 16 years and is hoping more citizens will push for the clean-up to happen..
CAO Bill Watson responded that efforts are still underway to get the property cleaned up, but since the owners have disappeared, the cost is so high and the contaminants are so complex, the clean-up process will require lots of outside help and experience, which can be hard to find.
At this point, there’s no word on when any physical clean-up efforts might begin, but council will be asking Ministry of Environment reps to make an appearance and help find some steps to fixing the situation.
