The violent crime index is up in the City of Belleville, following a national trend.
Statistics Canada lists Belleville’s violent crime index for last year at 91, up almost 24% from
last year.
Across Canada, the violent crime index last year was 74, also up, but not as dramatically, from 2014.
Belleville’s violent crime index had been trending lower since a peak of 113 back in 2011.
Over 30 Ontario communities, many of them First Nations or northern cities, had higher violent crime indexes than Belleville’s.
However, the city still ranks high.
As a comparison, Cobourg’s violent crime index was 42 last year, while Kingston’s was 56.
